Equipment

  • Cocktail shaker optional – can chill ingredients in fridge in advance instead
  • Coupe glass or small martini glass

Ingredients

Orange Rosemary Simple Syrup

  • 5 small Cara Cara or Blood oranges or 2 large oranges
  • 5-6 sprigs fresh rosemary
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup water

Cocktail

  • 2 small Cara Cara or Blood oranges or 1 large orange
  • 1 shot orange rosemary simple syrup
  • 1-2 shots vodka or gin
  • 1 ice cube
  • club soda enough to fill the glass the rest of the way to the top

Instructions

Orange Rosemary Simple Syrup

  • Peel the oranges, avoiding the white pith as much as possible (not the end of the world if some is still on the peels) and place the peels in a pot. Set aside peeled orange fruit for juicing into the cocktail later.
5 small Cara Cara or Blood oranges
  • Place the rosemary sprigs, sugar, and water in the pot with the peels.
5-6 sprigs fresh rosemary, 1/2 cup granulated sugar, 1/2 cup water
  • Bring the pot to a boil and then immediately turn off the heat.
  • Let sit without touching it for 10 minutes to allow the flavors to intensify. For a stronger rosemary orange taste, steep longer. For a more subtle flavor, steep for a shorter amount of time.
  • Strain and keep the liquid for up to 5 days in the fridge.

Cocktail

  • In a cocktail shaker, juice the oranges and add the simple syrup, gin/vodka, and an ice cube.
2 small Cara Cara or Blood oranges, 1 shot orange rosemary simple syrup, 1-2 shots vodka or gin, 1 ice cube
  • Shake vigorously until cold.
  • Strain into a coupe or small martini glass.
  • Pour club soda into the glass until it is full and garnish with an orange slice and/or rosemary sprig.
    club soda

Notes

If you don’t have a cocktail shaker, you can chill all the ingredients in the fridge before assembling the cocktail instead of shaking it in order to ensure that it is cold.
